A joyful, art-led conservation program for schools worldwide
Guardians of the Last is a global education and conservation program created by internationally acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc. Designed especially for schools, it empowers children to learn about the world’s most endangered animals, connect with them emotionally through creativity, and take real, meaningful action to protect wildlife.
At its heart, Guardians of the Last is about transforming children from passive learners into active protectors of the wild — using art, storytelling, empathy, and hands-on conservation.
Across the planet, 21 animal species are now critically endangered. Many children alive today may grow up in a world where these animals no longer exist. Guardians of the Last gives students the knowledge, emotional connection, and confidence to help change that future.
Why Guardians of the Last matters
Conservation doesn’t begin with facts alone — it begins with care.
Guardians of the Last is built on a simple but powerful belief:
When children learn about animals, feel a connection to them, and take action, they become lifelong protectors of the natural world.
This program helps children:
• Understand extinction and biodiversity in an age-appropriate way
• Build empathy for animals and ecosystems
• Recognise their own power to make a difference
• Feel pride, hope, and responsibility rather than fear or overwhelm
Rather than focusing on loss, Guardians of the Last focuses on hope, action, and possibility.
The mission is bold and global:
to create 1,000,000 Guardians of the Last worldwide.

A simple four-step journey every school can follow
Every school completes the same clear and flexible pathway, known as The Guardians of the Last Journey. It can be taught in one week, spread across a term, or adapted to suit any classroom or age group.
Step 1: Learn
Students are introduced to the world’s 21 most endangered animals through Gillie and Marc’s short educational film, discussion prompts, and engaging Fact Cards. They learn where these animals live, why they are threatened, and why they matter. This step builds understanding and awareness in a way that feels accessible, visual, and engaging.
Step 2: Feel
Each student chooses one endangered animal and creates an artwork inspired by its story. This might be a drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, digital artwork, poem, or story. This creative step is essential — it helps children form a personal emotional connection with an animal and see it as an individual, not just a statistic.
Step 3: Act
As a class or school, students complete one meaningful conservation action. This might be local (such as planting a habitat garden or reducing plastic waste) or global (such as fundraising, awareness campaigns, or presentations). The action can be small or big — what matters is that students experience the truth that their actions count.
Step 4: Celebrate
The journey ends with a Guardians of the Last ceremony, where students take the Guardian oath, receive certificates and badges, and celebrate their achievements. Each participating school is added to the global Guardians of the Last map, joining a worldwide community of young wildlife protectors.

Created by artists who use art to protect wildlife
Guardians of the Last was created by Gillie and Marc, internationally renowned artists known for their monumental public sculptures of endangered animals around the world.
Their artworks — from rhinos and elephants to gorillas, wolves, and whales — appear in major cities globally, turning public spaces into outdoor classrooms and reaching millions of people each year.
Through their charity, the Love The Last Wildlife Fund, Gillie and Marc focus on protecting 21 of the world’s most endangered animals. They have worked alongside conservationists, rangers, and sanctuaries, and have met some of the last remaining animals of their kind.
Guardians of the Last brings this real-world conservation work directly into classrooms — showing children that art can create awareness, and awareness can lead to action.
