World’s largest rhino statue installed in MetroTech Center

The Last Three,” a 17-foot stacked sculpture of the last remaining Northern White Rhinos on Earth, is going to be permanently installed at the MetroTech Center in Downtown Brooklyn.

The first public viewing started Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The statue features three rhinos, Sudan, Najin and Fatu, stacked on each other and covered in a gold patina, to draw attention to the illegal value of their horns, which is the cause of their extinction. Rhino horns are sold as medicine in Vietnam and China, and this statue promotes the cause to fight against illegal rhino poaching.

Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, died this March. The artists, Gillie and Marc Schattner, hope the installation will honor Sudan’s memory as well as all endangered species.

“We hope visitors to the sculpture will engage with our representation of this gentle species and connect with the deeper message which is one of inspiration and change,” Gillie said.
